Thermostats can last about 10 years, often longer, but much depends on the brand, and the technology used in it. You don’t want to replace your thermostat until you absolutely need to. Below, we give three signs of a malfunctioning thermostat that may help you decide that it’s time to buy a new one.
Inaccurate Temperature Readings
Thermostats lose their accuracy over time, and while its calibration is a regular part of most maintenance visits, this can only help for so long. The sensors may become old and damaged so that the thermostat never reads the indoor temperature correctly. To test its accuracy, use a digital thermometer and compare the two readings.
Abnormally Short or Long Cycles
These always attend a faulty temperature reading. On the one hand, a thermostat that thinks your home is cooler than it is will shut your system down before it cools to your liking. Conversely, a thermostat with a mistakenly higher reading will let the system run even after it has cooled to your satisfaction.
HVAC Unit That Fails to Turn On
Any number of problems can be behind a failure in startup. We hope that it’s the thermostat because replacing this device is less expensive than, say, replacing a motor or compressor. Bad internal switches in the controller are the most likely culprit, or you may own a thermostat that can’t connect with the outdoor unit.
